Install plugins and dynamic packs from the Extensions screen.

Extensions is the name for what you add to the editor: plugins and dynamic packs. Find and install them on the Extensions screen in Studio, and they come into the editors you open with that account.

Open the Extensions screen

  1. Click Extensions

In Studio, click the box-shaped Extensions at the bottom of the left sidebar. The Extensions screen opens and shows the plugin list. If the screen is narrow and has no sidebar, tap More in the tab bar at the bottom, then choose Extensions.

Clicking Extensions at the bottom of the sidebar shows the plugin list on the Extensions screen, and clicking the Dynamics chip changes the list to the Basic, Retro, and Backgrounds packs. Video: On the Studio home, clicking the box-shaped Extensions at the bottom of the left sidebar opens the Extensions screen with the default plugins, and clicking the Dynamics chip next to the search field changes the list to three packs: Basic, Retro, and Backgrounds. Each row shows Default at its right end.
  2. Choose the kind

Switch the kind with the Plugins and Dynamics chips next to the search field. Plugins is selected at first. Click Dynamics to see the dynamic packs.

Filter and search the list

Which extensions the chips and the search field on the Extensions screen show
Chip or fieldWhat it shows
AllEvery default extension SSHOW made, and every extension published after review. This chip is selected at first.
InstalledThe extensions that come into your editors now. The ones you installed show together with the default ones.
DefaultOnly what SSHOW made: 13 plugins, and three dynamic packs, Basic, Retro, and Backgrounds. Their rows show “Default” at the right end.
Search fieldSearches names, descriptions, and authors, in every language a pack is named in, so “retro” finds the Retro pack.

See the details

Click a row to open its detail dialog. Under the name are the version and the author, then “Default” for a default extension or the install count, such as “12 installs”, for a published one. The full description is below.

For a dynamic pack, each dynamic in the pack shows with a picture and its name. The pictures fill in after a moment, so you can see what each one looks like before you install the pack. The dynamics in each pack are also listed in Dynamics.

You can install or remove here too, with Install or Remove at the bottom of the dialog. A default extension’s dialog has only Close.

Clicking the Retro pack under the Dynamics chip fills the detail dialog with pictures of its seven dynamics. Video: On the Extensions screen, clicking the Dynamics chip lists the Basic, Retro, and Backgrounds packs, and clicking Retro fills the detail dialog with pictures of its seven dynamics, from Halftone to Scanlines.

Install

  1. Click Install

Click Install in the row of the extension you want. The right end of the row changes to “Installed” and a Remove button. Installs stay with your account, so it’s the same wherever you sign in: the web, the desktop app, or the tablet app.

Clicking Install changes the right end of the row to “Installed” and a Remove button. Video: On the Extensions screen in Studio, clicking Install in a published plugin’s row changes the right end of the row to Installed and a Remove button.
  2. Open the editor again

An installed extension comes into the editors you open after installing it. An editor that’s already open doesn’t get it, so close the editor and open it again.

  3. Find it in the editor

Plugins are in the list under the lightbulb Plugins button at the top right. A dynamic pack shows in the picker of a Dynamic, grouped under the pack’s name. Choose painting packs from a Fill or Stroke, and effect packs such as Retro from Effects. For how to pick, see Dynamics.

Remove

Click Remove in an installed row or in its detail dialog. The right end of the row changes back to Install, and editors you open after that don’t get it. Default extensions can’t be removed.

You can also remove a plugin with the − button at the right end of its row in the editor’s Plugins panel. Dynamic packs can’t be removed in the editor, so remove them on this screen.

A document painted with a pack still opens and draws after you remove the pack, because the editor fetches the packs a document uses when it opens. The same goes for a pack its developer unlisted.

Clicking Remove in an installed row changes the right end of the row back to an Install button. Video: On the Extensions screen in Studio, clicking Remove in the row of the installed Hello plugin changes the right end of the row back to an Install button. The other rows show only Default.

When something goes wrong

  • Why doesn’t a dynamic pack I installed show in the editor?

An editor you opened before installing doesn’t get it. Close the editor and open it again. Effect packs such as Retro are under Dynamic in Effects, not in a Fill.
  • Why does a row have no install button?

It’s a row marked “Default”. It comes with every editor, so you can use it without installing, and it can’t be removed.
  • Why do I get “You’ve reached the installed-extensions limit.”?

One account can install up to 100 extensions, plugins and dynamic packs together. Remove extensions you don’t use, then install again.
  • Why do I see “Couldn’t load extensions” or “Default dynamics are unavailable right now”?

The list couldn’t be fetched. Check your internet connection, and click Try again if it’s there. If it isn’t, reload Studio.
  • Do I need to install a pack to open someone else’s document that uses it?

No. When a document opens, the editor fetches the packs it uses, so it draws without installing anything. A pack its maker never published can’t be fetched, though, and its paint looks empty. For when a file carries its packs, see Dynamics.
