Send a link, and it plays in the recipient’s browser.

People who get a play link can watch and click through your project in their browser, even without an SSHOW account. The link always shows the last saved version, so you don’t need to send it again after you make changes. To choose who can edit with you, see Edit together.

Send a play link

This works with projects saved in Studio. Only project owners, such as the person who created the project or the team owner, can create a link or widen play access. A local .sshow file opened in the desktop app has no Share button.

  1. Open the Share window

Click the Share button on the right of the bar at the very top of the editor. The Share window opens. The top row shows who can open the link right now, and the address.

Clicking Share opens the Share window, with “Private” and the address in the top row. Video: Clicking the Share button on the right of the editor’s top bar opens the Share window, with Private and the project address in the top row.
  2. Choose play access

Under Play Access, choose Anyone with link. Play Link Settings appears below. With this access, people who get the link can watch without signing in.

Choosing Anyone with link brings up Play Link Settings below. Video: Choosing Anyone with link under Play Access in the Share window moves the check mark, and Play Link Settings with a Generate Link button appears below.
  3. Create the link

If there’s no link yet, go to Play Link Settings and click Generate Link. A view count and the password and expiration date fields appear. The link is created the moment you click, and it stays even if you close the window with Cancel.

Clicking Generate Link brings up the view count, the password and expiration date fields, and the Allow embedding in iframes switch. Video: Clicking Generate Link in Play Link Settings shows Play link generated, and 0 views, the password and expiration date fields, and the Allow embedding in iframes switch appear.
  4. Save

Click Save Changes at the bottom of the window. The window closes, and “Sharing settings saved” appears briefly. The icon on the Share button changes to a chain link.

Clicking Save Changes closes the window, and the Share button’s icon changes to a chain link. Video: Clicking Save Changes closes the Share window and shows Sharing settings saved, and the Share button’s icon changes from a lock to a chain link.
  5. Copy the link

Click the Share button again. The top row shows “Anyone with link” and the new address. Click Copy Link, and “Link copied.” appears. Paste the link into a message or an email and send it.

A “Link copied.” message appears when you click Copy Link in the reopened Share window. Video: Clicking the Share button again shows Anyone with link and an address with a token in the top row, and clicking Copy Link shows Link copied.

A link you copy before saving won’t open for the people you send it to

The top row and Copy Link follow the new play access only after you click Save Changes. If you copy before that, you get the old address, with a message such as “For now, only people who can see this project in Studio can open it.” It’s easy to miss, because you’re signed in and that address opens in your own browser. After you save, reopen the Share window and copy the link. Then open it in a window where you aren’t signed in to check it.

The five levels of play access

Who can open the link at each level of play access, and whether they need to sign in
Play accessWho can open itSign-in
PrivateOnly people who can open this project in Studio. New projects start at this level.Required
Space membersMembers of the space the project is in.Required
Team membersEvery member of the team, even if the project is in a private space.Required
Anyone with linkAnyone who gets the play link. You can add a password and an expiration date. Not required
PublicAnyone who knows the address. The project also appears in the creator’s Studio Works list. If the creator turned on Public profile in Settings, it shows on their public profile page too. To remove it, turn off Show this project in my works and save. Put a project on your works page explains the works list. Not required

Submitting to Stage makes play access Public

When you submit to Stage and templates, the project’s play access switches to Public. If the project isn’t public yet, you confirm with “Make public & submit” when you submit.

Short URLs and aliases

Under Short URL, click Generate Short URL to get two addresses with an 8-character code. The View link opens the presentation screen, and the Edit link opens the editor. The edit link opens only for people who are signed in and have editor access.

To use an easy-to-remember name instead of the code, type it in Custom Alias using English letters, numbers, hyphens (-), and underscores (_), and click Save Alias. You can’t use an alias that another project uses, or reserved words such as “team” and “admin.” Regenerate makes a new code and clears the alias. The old short URL stops opening.

Clicking Generate Short URL creates a view link and an edit link. Video: Clicking Generate Short URL under Short URL in the Share window brings up a view link and an edit link with an 8-character code, each with a copy button.

Short URLs don’t open when you share with “Anyone with link”

A short URL doesn’t carry the play link’s key, so people who aren’t signed in see “You don’t have access to this presentation.” In that case, send the address you copy with Copy Link. Use short URLs to promote a Public project or to share with teammates.

What people see when they open the link

The link plays the project fitted to the browser window, with no editing tools. To go to the next scene, click as the “Click to advance” hint at the bottom says, or press →. To go back to the previous scene, right-click or press ←. In a scene with timeline animation, a click moves that animation forward first. The keys and the order are the same as in Present.

When you move the pointer, the Refresh and Fullscreen buttons appear at the bottom right and go away after a moment. Refresh reloads the last saved project, and F turns full screen on and off. On the last scene, the show doesn’t advance any further and stays on that scene.

While you’re presenting this project, the screens of people with the link open advance along with your show. Present remotely with a link below explains it.

The link opens in a browser that isn’t signed in, and a click moves to the next scene. Video: Opening the play link in a browser that isn’t signed in shows the project fitted to the window with a Click to advance hint, and a click moves to the next scene.

Present remotely with a link

Instead of a video call, you can send just the play link and have viewers’ screens follow as you advance. This works for projects saved in Studio.

  1. Send the link

Follow Send a play link above: set play access to Anyone with link or Public, and send the play link to your viewers. When someone has the link open, an eye icon with a count shows in the editor’s top bar.

  2. Start presenting

Click the triangle-shaped Present from this scene button at the top right of the editor to start presenting, as Present shows. While Share live with viewers is on in Play Settings, the screens of people with the link open follow your scenes and animation. It’s on from the start, and Play settings shows how to turn it off.

  3. Follow along as a viewer

Viewers see “Live · presenter’s name” at the top center of the screen. If a viewer advances on their own, following stops, and Return to live starts it again. The × button next to it, Stop following, stops following altogether.

Checking who can see it and copying from the dashboard

Tip

To see who can watch right now. Look at the icon on the Share button. A lock means private, a folder means space, a two-person icon means team, a chain link means link, and a globe means public. Hover over the button to see the level’s name too.

Tip

To copy without opening the editor. On the Studio dashboard, right-click a project card and choose Copy Link. The same menu is also under the ⋯ button that appears at the top right when you hover over a card. Choose Share there to open the sharing settings.

Tip

Status has nothing to do with who can see it. At the bottom of the Share window, Status (Draft · In Progress · Under Review · Published) is a label for organizing projects on the dashboard. Changing it to Published doesn’t change who can open the link.
