Work with the Scenes list

The Scenes list shows the project’s scenes in playback order. The buttons in its title row have no labels, so this page calls them by their shapes.

  1. Open a scene

Click a scene card in the Scenes list. The scene opens on the canvas, and any selected object is deselected. Press PgDn to open the next scene, or PgUp to open the previous one.

Clicking the second scene card opens that scene on the canvas. Video: Clicking the second scene card, Menu, in the Scenes list highlights the card and opens that scene on the canvas. The title that was selected in the first scene is deselected.
  2. Add a new scene

Click the + button in the title row. A blank white scene, “New Scene”, appears at the end of the list and opens. To place it right after the scene you were on, drag its card there.

Clicking the + button adds a blank scene at the end of the list and opens it. Video: Clicking the + button in the title row of the Scenes list adds a blank white scene, New Scene, at the end of the list, and that blank scene opens on the canvas.
  3. Duplicate a scene

Click the duplicate button (two overlapping squares) in the title row. A copy of the scene appears right after the current one and opens. Move or change objects in the new scene. Objects in the two scenes have the same names, so when you turn on a transition, the two scenes flow into each other. To turn one on, see Your first transition.

Clicking the duplicate button copies the scene, and the circle in the new scene is moved and made larger. Video: The Duplicate button in the Scenes list copies the scene. In the new scene, the circle is moved to the right and made bigger by dragging a corner.
  4. Reorder scenes

Drag a scene card up or down. A blue line shows where it will land. The card moves only when you release it over another card, and the moved scene opens. When you play, scenes advance in the order of this list.

Dragging the last scene card to just after the first scene moves it there and opens it. Video: Dragging the Closing card up shows a blue line where it will land, and releasing it over the lower half of the Cover card moves Closing to second place and opens it.
  5. Rename a scene

Double-click the name on a scene card, type a new name, and press ↩. To add a description the same way, double-click the faint “Description” text below the name. A duplicated scene gets (Copy) at the end of its name, as in “New Scene (Copy)”. Renaming it makes it easier to find.

Double-clicking the name, typing a new one, and pressing ↩ renames the scene. Video: Double-clicking the name New Scene on a scene card, typing Cover, and pressing Enter changes the card’s name.
  6. Hide a scene

Hover over a scene card, and an eye button appears at its right end. Click it to dim the card and leave that scene out of playback and export. Click it again to bring the scene back. Use this for scenes you want to leave out without deleting them.

Clicking the eye button dims the card, and that scene is skipped during playback. Video: Hovering over the Menu card shows an eye button at its right end, and clicking it puts a slash through the eye and dims the card.
  7. Delete a scene

Right-click the card of the scene you want to delete and choose Delete Scene. The scene is deleted right away, without asking. If you delete one by mistake, press ⌘Z to undo. When there are two or more scenes, a trash can button also appears in the title row. That button deletes the scene that’s open now.

Right-clicking the card and choosing Delete Scene removes the scene, and pressing ⌘Z brings it back. Video: Right-clicking the Closing card and choosing Delete Scene removes the scene without asking, and pressing ⌘Z puts it back in its place.

Pressing Delete after clicking a scene card deletes the scene

When you click a scene card, the Scenes list takes keyboard input, and if you clicked another scene’s card, the selection is cleared too. If no object is selected at that point, Delete or ⌫ deletes the current scene. If it’s the only scene, it stays. To delete an object, click it on the canvas first and then press the key. If you delete a scene by mistake, press ⌘Z to undo.

Scene size and background

Change these in the Scene panel at the top of the right panel. Size applies to the whole project, and background applies to one scene.

  1. Change the size

In Size in the Scene panel, type values in W and H, and press ↩. The size changes for all scenes together. New projects are 1920 × 1080, and a vertical screen is W 1080, H 1920. When you change the size, the view fits the new size.

Typing 1080 in W and 1920 in H turns the scene vertical, and the view fits the vertical scene. Video: Typing 1080 in W and 1920 in H in the Scene panel on the right turns the scene vertical, and the view fits the whole vertical scene.
  2. Change the background

In the Fills row of the Scene panel, click the color square on the left. When the Colors window opens, choose a color. Each scene has its own background, so only the open scene changes. To learn how to choose colors, see Fill, stroke, and shadow.

Clicking the color square in Fills and choosing navy changes only this scene’s background. Video: With nothing selected, clicking the white color square in the Fills row of the Scene panel and choosing navy in the Colors window turns only the open scene’s background navy.

Copying objects, clipping contents, and searching scenes

Tip

To put the same object in another scene. Select the object and press ⌘C to copy it, then open the other scene and press ⌘V to paste it. It lands in the same spot with the same name, so when you turn on a transition, the two scenes flow into each other.

Tip

To hide parts that go past the scene. In Options in the Scene panel, turn on Clip Contents. Anything outside the scene’s edges is hidden.

Tip

To find a scene when you have many. In the search field at the top of the Scenes list, type a word from a scene’s name or description. Only matching cards remain.
